A large focus of our science in the Ward Lab, is engaging with others to either conduct science, practice conservation, or support local governmental agencies and NGOs. Here are just a few of our collaborators and projects we support.
Delaware Bayshore Horseshoe Crab Conservation
In the spring each year, hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds descend upon the Delaware Bayshore. The phenology of this event is coupled with that of the horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) who’s spawning provides shorebirds, including the Red Knot, with some much needed sustenance. Horseshoe crabs have been in decline due to over-harvest, entrapment in anthropogenic structures, and loss of beach due to sea level rise. We assist educators and students of Haddonfield High School and the New Jersey DEP’s program ‘Return the favor’ in surveying beaches and rescuing imperiled crabs.
